While Hope Force meets many practical needs — specifically shelters for disaster survivors — we know how critical emotional and spiritual needs are, too.
We want to do more in this area of care, so we're thrilled to introduce Susan Cress as our new Senior Chaplain! Here's a bit about her:
What's your background?
"I worked 34 years for the YMCA where I learned the value of listening, supporting, and quality training. I enjoyed offering support groups and faith resources."
What got you interested in being a chaplain?
"After becoming a believer at the University of Tennessee, I felt drawn to mission work, viewing my YMCA role as part of that. A call to chaplaincy became clear during a 2020 tornado response in Nashville, confirming my commitment to providing compassionate care."
Do you and your husband deploy to disasters together?
"My husband and I have different skills. He excels in planning and construction, while I focus on heart and faith. Together, we minister to and support others using our respective talents."
Why Hope Force?
"I love working with Hope Force because they serve those underserved or overlooked. While the media focuses on those with resources, Hope Force intentionally helps those struggling before and after storms."
Susan will lead the charge in organizing, recruiting, training, and deploying emotional and spiritual caregivers — ensuring that we continue to manifest God's love and foster resilience and hope in times of crisis.
